President Dr. Mulatu Teshome called on the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to extend its support for Ethiopia’s efforts towards building a resilient society.

While holding talks with delegation led by IFRC Under Secretary Dr. Jemilah Mahmood yesterday, he commended the humanitarian activities societies have been doing in Ethiopia.

President Dr. Mulatu stated that the Societies need to give attention to support government’s endeavors in building a resilient community having the capability to withstand natural and man-made challenges.

Enhancing water supply in the drought-prone areas would have lasting effect in improving the community’s drought resilience capacity, the President noted.

Dr. Mulatu affirmed his government’s unreserved support for IFRC in its humanitarian activities in the country.

After the discussion, IFRC Under Secretary Dr. Jemilah told reporters that the IFRC is closely working with the Ethiopian Red Cross Society to address the critical needs of drought affected citizens.

She said the two societies have been engaged with local communities to build their drought resilience capacity.

Praising the role the Society has been playing in responding the drought, the Under Secretary reaffirmed the IFRC’s support.

Dr. Jemilah noted that the delegation would pay a field visit to assess the magnitude of the problem with a view to mobilizing donors’ support to people affected by the drought.

For his part, Society Board President Dr. Ahmed Reja said the Society has been closely working with international entities including IFRC to address drought burdens.

Dr. Ahmed noted that the Society has extended various supports to people affected by the drought in supplying cattle and digging water wells.

Stressing the active participation of all actors in the drought response, he called on IFRC and other stakeholders to support the Society’s effort.
