The three-time Olympic gold medalist and the 5, 000m and 10, 000m world champion Kenenisa Bekele will take the front-page along with Tirunesh Dibaba of the Ethiopian Athletics’ team for the IAAF World Championships that will be staged in London.
The global big event is set to take place from August 4-13.
Kenenisa was the dominant force in a 5,000m and 10,000m race at major international championships since he first won gold in 10, 000m in 2004 Athens Olympics. But he was sidelined in the wake of his defeat in the 2012 London Olympic due to leg injury. This time he is leading the Ethiopian contingent in London.
Also selected is the other three-time women’s gold medalist Tirunesh Dibaba. She has dominated the 5, 000m and 10, 000m after securing double at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Both Kenenisa and Tirunesh are expected to get gold in marathon and 10, 000m, respectively, this time. The two super powers are in preparation under the watchful eye of the national coach Tolosa Kotu.
The younger sister of Tirunesh, Genzebe is looking to regain the top spot in 1, 500m in London. In an unexpected race she finished second in Rio 1, 500m race. But this time Genzebe looks determined to snatch gold to in her event.
The Ethiopian national team head coach Tolosa Kotu said that the London 2017 is the major global sporting event after the country faced debacle in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The coach added: The people expect good result in London. I expect the country’s incredibly talented athletes will never miss to grasp this great opportunity and produce the best of their talent that will make the whole nation proud.
Both Kenenisa and Tirunesh have dominated the 5, 000m and 10, 000m track events for years in recent years. It may be another chance to see them winning in the London World championship in ten day times.
The new Ethiopian young talents who emerged victorious in youth championships will also be there to make history. The recent Diamond League meeting saw extra ordinary performance from Ethiopians.
Looking at their training ground it seems they are ready to repeat the feat they had shown there.
The good thing about this championship is that it is organized after Haile became the Ethiopian athletics Federation President.
After facing heavy criticism following the Rio Olympics, the country’s athletics governing body elected new executive committee members. Under this new set up in addition to Haile the former athletes such as Gebreigziabher Gebremariam and Derartu Tulu got place in the Executive Committee.
This is the first time athletes to get place in the executive committee of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation.
